Overview
If you're making a Certification available to your partners as a formal training qualification, you have the option to include a Certificate that a user can download when they've completed it. They can also access the Certificate in their My Certifications page, if this is available in the portal.
You create the Template for the Certificate, and content such as the user's name, the Certification name, and the date can be populated automatically from placeholders when they qualify for the Certificate. Certificate Templates are editable PDF documents.
You can manage multiple Certificate Templates in your LMS, and assign a different one to each Certification.
For information about managing Certifications, see Building an LMS.
This is an example of a Certificate Template (it's attached at the end of this article).
Before You Begin
To create a branded Certificate Template, you will need access to a PDF tool such as Adobe Acrobat.

Create a Certificate Template
Certificate Templates are PDF documents and are created using a PDF tool such as Adobe Acrobat. This enables you to create high-quality certificates for your partners.
Similar to Co-brandable Print Media, the Certificate Template is personalized using form fields.
Once a partner completes a Certification, the Certificate Template associated with the Certification will generate the partner’s specific information. If the name of the form field on the PDF matches one of the values below, it will be populated with the appropriate details for the partner user when it is downloaded from the portal:
- CERTIFICATION_NAME
- Pulled from the Certification Name field for the Certification
- USER_NAME
- First and last name of the partner user
- PARTNER_NAME
- Partner Company, taken from the partner's Unifyr Company Profile
- COMPLETED_DATE
- The date the partner user completed the Certification
To create a certificate, follow these steps:
- Create your Certificate design with blank areas where you can add form fields. We recommend MS Word.
- Save the Certificate document as a PDF. If you do not have one, you can download and use the sample defaultCertificate.pdf attachment from the end of this article. The sample already has form fields in it.
- In the PDF edit tool, navigate to the Form editing area (in Adobe Acrobat, this is Tools > Prepare a form).
- Choose to add a text field.
- Click in the PDF to place the text field in the required location and adjust/format as required.
-
Enter a form field value in the text field, which will generate actual information when the certification is generated from the template - see the list above.
For example:
- Click out of the text field to confirm the addition.
- Repeat the process for each field you want to use.
- Save the changes to the PDF.
Upload a Certificate Template to Unifyr
Once you've created your Certificate Template PDF, you can upload it to Unifyr. It will then be available to link to a Certification.
- Navigate to Partner Management > Learning Management > Certificate Templates.
- Click Create Template.
-
Provide a Template Name. This is the name for use in Unifyr.
- Click Upload a template and browse for your Certificate PDF.
- Click Save. Your Certificate Template is added to the Certificate Templates list.
You can now link the Certificate Template to the Certification for which it applies. When a user completes the Certification, a certificate with their personal details will be generated from the template. For more information, see Create a Certification.
Update a Certificate Template
You can make some changes to a Certificate Template once you've uploaded it to Unifyr:
- Change its display name
- Download it, make amendments to it externally, and re-upload it. This allows you to manage minor updates to the template without having to create an entirely new one, and minimizes the risk of the template being lost.
If you update a Certificate Template, users that have already completed the Certification will get the new certificate if they go back to download theirs after you've made the change.
- Navigate to Partner Management > Learning Management > Certificate Templates.
- Click on the template you want to edit, to open it.
- If you just want to change the name, enter the new one in Template Name, click Save, then exit the page.
-
If you want to make more extensive edits, you'll need to download the template for update in an external application. Click Download Template.
- Make the required changes to the PDF in the external application.
- Go back to the Certificate Templates page in Unifyr Admin.
- Open the template you want to replace with a new version.
- Click Upload a template and upload the new version of the template. Don't change the Template Name, so the new template will overwrite the existing version.
- Click Save. The template will be updated.
Delete a Certificate Template
You can remove a Certificate Template from Unifyr Admin.
- Navigate to Partner Management > Learning Management > Certificate Templates.
- Click on the template you want to edit, to open it.
- Click Delete Template.
- You're asked to confirm that you want to continue with deleting the template, with a message confirming if the template is currently linked to any Certifications. Deleting the template will remove it from the linked Certifications, so you may want to update the Certifications to add a new certificate.
- Click Delete to proceed. The template is removed from the Certificate Templates list.
